Reducing the number of stores that sell tobacco makes prevention and cessation efforts more effective by decreasing social acceptability and changing the norm. Community Partnerships, like POW'R Against Tobacco in Putnam, Orange, Westechester and Rockland Counties NY, are working with pharmacies and grocery stores to stop selling tobacco products.

Studies show that youth are three times more sensitive to tobacco advertising than adults and are more influenced to smoke by tobacco advertising than by peer pressure. Knowing this, the tobacco industry spends over $15 billion annually marketing to our youth. To fight back against Big Tobacco, POW'R Against Tobacco is one of many coalitions and community partnerhips in New York that participates in a campaign asking local tobacco retailers to reduce, remove and rearrange tobacco advertising in and around their stores. If you are a Tobacco Retailers who is interested in learning more about how to eliminate tobacco sales to minors, contact us and consider making a commitment to health by instituting a policy to reduce, remove or rearrange tobacco advertisements from your store.

The second part of this initiative involves asking village, town and city boards to sign a resolution supporting the reduction of tobacco ads in their community. Municipalities that would like to review our proposed resolution to reduce tobacco signage can download this sample resolution:
