POW’R: Putnam County
Meetings take place the last Wednesday of every other month (January, March, May, July, September, and November) at 12:30 PM at: Putnam County Cornerstone Park, 1 Fair St, Carmel, NY 10512.
Located in the lower Hudson Valley of New York State and north of Westchester County, Putnam County extends from the Connecticut border to the Hudson River. When New York State instituted its first twelve counties in 1683, the present Putnam County was part of Dutchess County. In 1812, Putnam County became independent from Dutchess. The county is made up of six towns: Kent, Patterson, Philipstown, Putnam Valley, Southeast, and Carmel. The six towns comprising the county had attained their current names and boundaries by 1877. From Cold Spring to Brewster, its villages feature local businesses that possess a uniqueness and candor that are enjoyed by citizens and visitors.
Putnam County is named in honor of Israel Putnam, who was a hero in the French and Indian War and a general in the American Revolutionary War. Another famous person from the county was Sybil Ludington, known as the "Paul Revere of Putnam County", because on April 26, 1777 she rode on horseback all night across the county warning people that the British troops had begun burning down Danbury, Connecticut which was only 25 miles away. A statue, in her honor, is located on Gleneida Avenue in Carmel, NY.
The Putnam County Coalition partners with community and social-service based agencies to promote awareness about the impact of tobacco use, its lung-related diseases, and how tobacco companies promote their products through community event sponsorship.
If you are concerned about how tobacco advertising targets the youth in your community and the impact of second-hand smoke, join the coalition and attend a meeting by contacting Anthony Massarelli (See main contact info below).
